Alright so a year ago I decided an attempt at sps corals . I've been reefing for about nine years. I have stuck with l p s and softies most of the time but now I set up an awesome 40 breeder and started trying SPS. The tank is approximately a year-and-a-half old and I've had SPS and there 4 about 9 months. The problems I'm running into is 4 of my sps stn from the base I couldn't tell if it was due to my flow (I accidentally set it for on/off every 6 minutes but I corrected it) or some other reason.
Everything has always been stable I test alk ph cal and mag every 3 days.
Alk 7.7-8.0
Cal 415-425
Ph 8.3-8.5
Mag- 1270-1400.
I run an ecotech at 20k for mid day 65 percent with 2 t5 for supplement
It's a bean animal overflow to a 29g sump. In the sump I run a reef octopus rodc 2500 for a return , cheats in fuge , and a skimz skimmer. According to my apex I haven't had any temp swings 79.7-80.5
I dip the corals before the go in with coral rx and inspect for pests periodically. To this date nothing. Please help me figure this out. Was it the flow that I fixed , is it my lighting or is it something else

Hi, Im a sps newb as well. Im interested in your no and po. Another question would be your lighting. Do you know the Par by chance. Waiting for others too as Im curious on your color temp. I recently changed from 20k to 14k MH + led blues. A couple sticks colored up well, one monti completely changed color, and growth exploded.

And we love pics:)

Do you test nitrates and phosphates? That could be the problem. Either they are 0 and you are starving the corals or they are too high.

In addition to the above mentioned, do you use a properly calibrated (1.026 solution) refractometer?

At 17" deep if you have the ecotech at the standard recommend height of 9" off the water. 65% intensity will cause issues with most SPS. Would suggest turning the intensity down to 30% and testing Par with a meter. Also would be good to send a test out to Triton to check all your levels and make sure there is nothing out of balance SPS are really sensitive to parameters.

Morning Sir,
Do you know off hand what kind of par range that gives, mid to top of tank perhaps? I would assume near the 500 mark at the top perhaps less.
Thanks

so interesting the relationship between spectrum intensity and parameters with these animals in an enclosed system(captivity). ESP when you consider many of them spend hours out of the water in the wild.

So my refrac is calibrated I do so twice month salinity is 35 ppt . No is 1ppm and po4 is .03 . I don't have par readings. I'll shoot a pic tonight when I get home from work

Unfortunately, looks to be something eating it

Everything was going perfect had a bunch of beginners stylos birdsnest and monti then I added some more expensive ones and of course those are the ones taking a hit

If it matters anyway before they started going it looked like they were about to start bleaching and they were getting bumpy and then all the sudden tissue started coming off
