Figured it would be right to post this in here.
Anyways,I'm starting my first SPS dominant tank which will be a 55 gallon(48x13x20)
I've kept alot of SPS before but not a tank just devoted to SPS.
I need some help on confirming that I'm all set and can start the build.
I got...
tank:55 gallon
Sump:20 gallon long sump.skimmer,fuge,return section.
Skimmer:swc extreme 160 come skimmer
Lighting:2x ai sol whites with controller
Return pump:probably a mag or eheim 1260
Flow:mp20 for now,but will upgrade to an mp40.
Reactors:2x two little fishies or brs reactors.
Rock:about 40 pounds of brs reef saver
Heater:whatever I have available.
Dosing:will be manually dosing 2 part along with mag.

Anything that I'm missing to have a successful SPS dominant tank?

sps is not all about equipment, its all consistency and good water quality, you seem to have all the stuff needed to get the tank started and cyling.

I have heard mixed reviews on AI's and sps...personally im sticking to MH for a while.

for reactors either will work, personally prefer the Avast media reactors over just about everything...

for return go with an Eheim over a mag (a little more cost, less energy, and eheims last a VERY long time). or look at the waterblasters for energry efficiency (im going with one on the new tank, for yours a hy5000 or 3000 should do and be able to feed your reactors)

flow wise you could either get the mp40 or keep the 20 and buy some cheaper koralia's or something but thats all personal preference. i run 2 mp40s and a tunze 6080 & 6045 on my 90g (4ft x 18in) but i like ALOT of flow)...also depends on your aquascaping as well.

i suggest and RODI unit as well

Only thing your missing is SPS....

I Agree with Der ABT

Yea mp20 wont even come close to cutting it. I am not sure about a 55 because it has thinner glass but I tried one on a 75 and the glass is too thick it turns at a much slower speed.

Another return pump to think about is a tunze. They are super quiet, powerfull and energy efficient and a decent price.

ro/di a must.

Yeah I already have an rodi haha.
Been in the hobby for about 4 years.
I'm pretty good with keeping params in check and having a stable system.
Never had a algae breakout past the first moth on any of my tanks,I use dry rock, never had a tank crash or anything.
I'm pretty cautious and want things to be perfect so I put the extra time and effort into a tank to have it successful long run.

It's either the 2 aqua illuminations or t5's but I vote leds.if the ai's aren't good for SPS then I dont see why people will use DIY led for SPS...ai uses the same 3w Crees as every other major led fixtures,so there's no difference other than optics.

And an mp20 should be plenty in the beginning.
I doubt that an mp20 can't fit onto a 75...an mp20 is the same thing as an mp40 just a different driver and power supply.
And that allows them to be used on close to an inch thick glass.

Thizz, the advice above is very good. I cannot speak to the LED's as I don't have direct experience with them. If you are starting the tank with just SPS frags, I would think they would be fine. But perhaps others with direct experience can chime in. While the MP20 is the same wetside, the power of an MP40 is quite noticeable. If you will just have frags, you may be able to get away with 1 MP20 for a while. However, once the frags start to grow you will want to upgrade that asap. Flow is a very important factor in an SPS tank. Sounds like you have a good plan together. Please start a build thread here on R2R once you get things going. I would love to follow the progress! : )

Well the mp10 is rated up to 3/8" glass and mp40 3/4" glass so there is some difference. Mine runs slower on my 75 than my on 30 gallon and you can hear it whine more because it trying harder to turn.

Forget it I thought you meant mp10... Mp20 is not even made anymore and not sure on the specs.

Flow isn't an issue for me right now,Its a matter of upgrading to the mp40 for $100 which I will do.

Okay, well looks like I have enough to start.
Hopefully I can build the stand this weekend.

Most of the DIY leds yuo see have more then RB and CW, putting some more spectrum in there helps alot from what ive read...otherwise you end up bleached looking SPS...again i dont use led so cant speak for sure but the locals ive seen have either switched back to t5 or mh but some of the radions and other DIY kits with multiple colors mixed in seem to do better...
last i checked AI sol whites dont offer a mix of colors....that is the difference not just optics...

AI Sol Whites are 2 whites to 2 blues while the SOL Blues are 1 white 2 royal blue and 1 blue per puc. I have only been using LEDS for a short time but I can tell you they perform just as good as my halides did and then some. I currently only run them at 50% blue and 35% whites and have a par reading at the bottom of the tank of 125. I have a standard 90gal tank.

As far as flow goes, dont even waste your time on a mp20 it simply will not be enough. I run 2 40s in my tank and I still feel I could use more flow.

I would look into an auto dosing system. Since stability is key with sps, I don't know why you want to be dosing manually.
