I’m getting a custom tank done, 48”x24”x22”, 113 gallons. My ideas for flow

4 mp40s. 2 on the back, 1 on each side.

Or

1 gyre on each side, and 2 mp40s on the back.

Thoughts...?

Either way thats a ton of flow I have a 4x2x2 on a SPS dominate tank, my tank does have a sand bed, so although i crank it up but not to high.. I run 2 MP40's at 90% reef crest throughout the bulk of the day and it drops down to 50% overnight.. your return pump will create additional flow as well so keep that in mind... with all the flow you're thinking about just make sure your not directly blasting your corals it may be too intense..

I have a 5 foot tank x 2 x 2. I have one large gyre in pulsating mode making waves ever 5 seconds set randomly between 50 and 100 percent. It is more than enough

Yeah, I wouldn’t blast them all directly. I could run 2 higher and lower intensity and switch them during the day. Have them all run low at night. I like the idea of flow from all directions.

I’d just put them on a reeflink and make it easy. So I’ve heard. I haven’t used a reeflink yet.

Same tank dimensions.. 2 gyre xf230 on alternating gyre... 50% on max, 10% on low and 1 minute ramping up and down.

If you decide to go 4x MP40s, you could put two on 1 side, and two on the other side. You could then run the front left pump and the back right pump in sync, with the back left pump and front right pump in antisync. This way you could create a strong, alternating gyre.

i think 2 mp40 would be enough for a 48" tank

Not even. Maybe when they're baby frags, sure, but as they grow 4 minimum.

People tend not to think about tomorrow in this hobby. They get a big tank, put on a pair of undersized powerheads and call it a day, good forever, right?! Nope.

Look at all the big mature SPS tanks. There's a reason most of them are littered with powerheads all over the place. The really big ones usually have sea swirls in the FRONT corners, as well as the 4-6 additional powerheads.

So for today -- Yeah, 2 is fine. But for tomorrow? He's gonna need at *least* two more.

I agree rakie, it's going to be hard to provide too much flow for acropora if your not aiming directly at any corals.
I had two mp60 2 mp40 and a gyre on a 3' cube with small colonies and it didn't hurt anything.

Look at the new wavepuck pumps, great spread out flow and is cheap. It really moves a lot of water and not in a straight line like the gyre.

I run 4 MP-10s at near 100% on a 36in tank. Been looking at MP-40's for more flow....
