ok, how do i set up an SPS tank because one of the frags i got at the swop isn't looking to hot, its starting to bleech. need help and info to set up a tank for all of the SPS i got at the swop i have a 10 gallon tank i could use and put a skimmer on it and ad calcium. i also have a light and power head. i just need to know if the tank is big enuf and if so how do i need to set it up so my coral doesn't dye.

Andy:

You could keep it in a 10 gallon, but it would be a task for a very experienced SPS keeper. I'd recommend trying ro a 55 to 75 gallon tank as a minimum to keep SPS without pulliing your hair out.

That said the key is stability. Keep you temperature between 2-3 degrees over a 24 hour perioud. Keep the Ammonia and nitrates as close as possible to 0. Keep the Calcium between 380 and 420 and the alk around 9 dkh.

I hope this helps if you have any questions please feel free to PM me and i'll give you my phone number as thats probably an easier way to communicate.

You are not going to be able to set up a tank and have it ready for sps in a short amount of time if you know someone with a sps tank let them take it until you have a place for it.

Andy:

I'm assuming the issue is the frags I gave you because I didn't want to pack them up after the swap? If so try your best and i'll always give you more when you get things to where they need to be. I didn't realize you only had a 10 gallon tank.

I know it isn't much, but i have a 29 gallon that I used at the swap you can have to atleast get you some more volume if you want. Let me know.

That is a crock... Our flyer says only 20 and 29 gallon aquairums are $1 per gallon. They used to do tanks through 40B's. I got two the last time (though they charged taxes on full price, somehow).

well it was a acro that was white with purple tips and green polips and it looks dead now i gues the lighting just wasn't strong enuf. ill keep it in there just to see if it purks back up but owell that was my favorite pece gues ill wate till next year to get another and set a tank up in the meen time.

It wasn't the lighting unless you got it two or three months ago. If you have a acro under less than ideal lighting it will normally turn brown and then slowly die over a very long time. If you put it in a tank with less than ideal water parameters it will bleach and die in a much shorter amount of time. Like a few days to a few weeks.

I have a acro I got a few week ago in my twenty gallon because my sps tank is only six weeks old and I don't know if it is ready for acros just yet. I just put a test frag of the of the acro in my 20 into my 75 a few day ago if it is looking good in 2 weeks or so I will move the colony to the 75. The 20 have 2 HO t5s without individual reflectors and 2 normal output T5s. The 75 has a 8bulb TEK fixture on it. I have pics of the acro in the photography forum under the thread "up late taking pics in the dark"

if you only had it a week or two it is way more likely that it was the water parameters than the light.

If it was white when you got it (like a couple of big pieces I got-blueberry acro one of them), it may not have been completely healthy to begin with. The two I have that seemed somewhat bleached out when I picked them up I have under almost no light until they start to put on some texture to the color (not just hues-I want to see skin;)). If if was already stressed (white), too much light on the change may have been the final nail. I may be way off base, though.

I agree gflat65
If it was in bad shape in the first place too much light could have been a or the problem

I thought it was the only one in the tank
Just out of curiosity what lighting do you have on your tank???

Did you notice Rev is going to sell his 140 gal tank? You need to rely on your youth and budding enthusiasm in order to talk him into a really good price for that tank..... You know that Tommy and Bryan will stock you up with frags (me too as soon as my stuff grows) and we all have some extra live rock that we probably don't like that would seed any new stuff really well.....

OK, so the light would be pretty expensive and the rest of the stuff, but you could make your own refugium out of one of those $1 a gallon tanks and some acryllic and caulking..... Sweet talk someone with an old skimmer to sell it cheap. Everybody likes young enthusiastic kids. Use it to your advantage. When you get old like Alex, they don't give you stuff until you get REALLY old like me and they think you might die off, so what the heck....

thanks for the info susan. the light i have is a T5 (21" 10K 130WATTS) so the light could have been what killed it, well... it has some color but its quickly dwendling. i got it from that travaling sells man, that Dr. guy.
