SPS tank with Viparspectra

Would love to see the pic today if this pic is from 2016.

Small correction, the initial pic is actually from 2017.

So the pictures in my first post are actually the same coral. Basically all the tissue had died except for a small dime-sized patch growing on the side. I cut the living tissue off the main skeleton and glued it to the tile. So it's gone from this in 07/2017:

In both pictures the colors are pretty true to real life.

I didnt realize those two were connected. Even more impressed with the revival. Especially with the amount of time. Beautiful looking coral. Could be a centerpiece!

I'm getting good growth under my 300W unit. It's the same as the 165W, just double the size for larger tanks. I'm bad at documenting coral growth with pictures, but I have some good examples of one coral that was on death's doorstep and is making a great recovery.

For a little background, I got this coral as part of a 10 for $99 SPS pack on Ebay. It arrived brown and drab and slowly declined over the course of 2+ years. I was living in an apartment and didn't have much time or space to improve water quality. Eventually it was down to probably six actual polyps still living. I almost wrote it off as a lost cause and tossed it in my sump, but I'm really glad I didn't. After I moved last year and got the water quality better, the thing started growing and encrusting its dead skeleton. A few months ago I transplanted it to a frag tile and it's been growing great ever since. It's developing some really nice blue/purple coloration around the tips. All growth under Viparspectra lights. I can't wait to see how this thing looks when it's grown out.

Here it is on 6/11/2020 right after I glued it to a 3" tile. I cut what living tissue was trying to grow off the mostly dead skeleton. It broke during the cutting process.

How high off the tank do you have the lights? I have the same unit and have heard that 14" is optimal. Plus at what light concentration white and blues?
Thanks-

It's funny you say that, I never knew that 14" was the optimal height, but through trial and error I picked 14.5" above the water. I run the blues at 93 and the whites at 40. Using a lux meter I've estimated the PAR at the surface is probably between 500 and 600.

I have read 12 is the best, 10 and now 14.5. I guess it goes back to what works for you. Does anyone use the wiring they send with the lights? It looks like im able to make the string tighter, but I dont see a way to loosen it so that I can hang the lights lower. Any insight on this?

Gernader nice corals, but that is not a Tyree Tri-Color Valida, my guess would be aqua delight

BRS recently did a video on black boxes and 14" was optimum for our boxes!!!
Thanks for the info!!!

Thanks! I only went with that name because that’s what a reefer called it who I bought it from. It looks like you are right after looking it up! Good to know

great thread. I'm considering the vipars or Ocean Revives. If I go vipars, is there an advantage to going with 3 300w or just 3 165 w. 6' tank, so 2 300's won't cover

Are you suggesting that initial frag (is THAT the dime sized frag on the side?) grew to whats on the tile now, or you saved a few polyps off that frag and grew that onto the tile? If the former, its not much growth after 3 years, and it makes me think these lights aren't great for acros, although they maybe can just sustain them?

A friend of mine bought these lights to run over a frag tank for his business and noticed dulling of colors, and very minimal encrusting/growth (coming from T5 and MH tanks); things just didn't look healthy under these lights.

Between these and the Ocean Revives, I think the VPS are the easy choice since there's warranty and also the blues/violets are on their own channel (vs OR having violets on the white channel - stupid).

You can't possibly believe the post you quoted is three years of growth. The story of the frag is in my initial post. You should read that before taking a specific response to a specific user out of context.

This is the frag in 06/11/2020 on a 3" tile:

interesting. The post I quoted said " So it's gone from this in 07/2017: " to "this in 09/2020"

nothing was taken out of context. Just what you wrote. Had you posted this picture, why would I question it? And clearly, I asked for an explanation.

ok, lets forget about dates and frags ;) back to op lights, vps is vipers? do you suggest 3 165, 3 300 if so on other members question on 125 post 29:)

I haven't tried these lights with straight Acros but they have kept my pocillopora/stylo/montis growing like weeds...
I also keep all kinds of LPS under these and they are all growing well. I keep mine at 18in off the water.

Used viparspectra initially for cheap-mid range acros such as WD, Growth are great and I didn’t see a need for radion etc. however as I moved into high ends tenius such as acrolandia etc, radion shows off better color for sure

This looks like it could be a nice acro either way. Might be a gemiferra? If so it’s a difficult piece and a very cool acro that not many people keep.

Yeah I've yet to find anything it looks like. In some shots, it kind of looks like WWC's Blueberry, but they run such heavy blue I can't tell for sure.

It's coming along well though. I made an animated sequence of growth (excuse the poor GIF quality) and it's definitely still basing out, despite me having some serious dino issues. The shots are from 06/2020, 08/2020, 09/2020 and 10/2020:

I use Mars Aqua 165W for mine. It’s similar to viparspectra. I just got into SPS a couple of months ago and they are growing fast under my lights!
