Hey guys well im having a problem with my acros some of the tips seem to be burning/peeling away like something is biting it but its not i stood literally for hours to see if one of my fish are pecking at corals but nothing, i have also gotten out of bed a 3am to see if there's some type of crab niping at the corals at night and again nothing i dont understand what is happening and my tank parameters seem to be perfect except for nitrates please give me some insight into what you guys might think the problem is.

salt 1.026
ph 8.2
ca 420
alk 8.0
mg 1300 and cant get it any higher
n03 15ppm and cant get it down
p04 undetectable
temp 77deg

check for stray voltage
I had some acros peeling from tips and lps bleaching couldnt find the problem till i put finger in tnk with small cut and zap.
fixed the problem and all is good now amazing how fast they recovered.

I'd guess an alk swing. A swing in alkalinity will lead to burnt tips. Keep your paramters stable and keep a watchful eye on the damaged tips. If algae starts to grow on them, it could cause further damage, so you may want to clip them off if you notice any algae growing.

fortunately i have never had alk swings i test every 2-3 days and my alk has always been at 8 dkh, i will def check for stray voltage but i must say i've had cuts on my hands and had never been shocked

Could they have started to grow into an area with a higher water current than they are used to?

no they have not the thing is that its only happening to some stems of certain acros not all the stems and not all the acros

New bulbs?

Are you using biopellets? Yes did you start half dosage also are the pellets tumbling

Have you tested for ammonia?

my tank is about a year old when i started my tank i had live rock which i left out to dry just incase of any pest but my tank did cycle, i do run gfo and i stoped using it cause my p04 is 0 that was ruffly about a week ago but i have not seen the corals get anybetter just worse, man this sucks especially for my green bali slimer colony ive had to cut it twice and the same thing keeps happening to the tips.

i have not tested for ammonia but will do tonight, i did replace bulbs about 3 months ago but everything was fine until 2 weeks ago and like i said its only happening to certain acros and only some of the tips of those acros and no i do not run biopellets and will hopefully get some pics tonight thanks guys

What test kits are you using? do you dose anything to keep params in check? is there anything you have changed at all? do you use ro/di?

salifert test kits and it doesn't expire till 8/2012, i only dose ca,alk,mg and i top off with ro water from the fish store nothing else

I'm still sticking with GFO. It can take a week or two after you turn off the reactor before you will start to see signs of improvements. Sounds like you have limited (stripped) your nutrients in your system due to phosphates being undetectable. Cut off carbon too and do some water changes (25 % once a week)

Just to get some zooplankton back into the system a bit faster. With 0 phosphates, you are basically removing the food source for your zooplankton, which is your food source for your acros. Long term, the corals will starve.

Not saying that this is your problem for sure but I wouldn't rule it out.
