Why do acropora corals get bubble tips? Some of the tips of a acroora i have will bubble up inflate i guess. I was wondering what would cause this. When the bubble or inflation goes away there is new growth.

Never seen that before. Are you referring to the flesh bubbling up...have any pics?

Sounds like what a coworker of mine described regarding an amino overdose... Hmmm...

Yes flesh bubbles up up at times on one of my acros.I have no idea why this happens it dosnt harm the coral as there is new growth every time. I think i have some pics but there pretty bad ill have to see where they are.

sample pic i found on the net but it didnt say why it happen.

only time i exp that in my tank was when a chalice put its sweepers out and stung the acro tips...... really hard to say on a case by case basis but that's what happened to mine.....one other time i had a slight alk spike and the skeleton litterally dissolved inside the skin leaving it bubbly like that, well sort of that pic is pretty drastic.....i cut it off to see what was going on and inside i saw the skeleton had kind of crumbled and it was broken it was real weird.....

Thats about the strangest thing I've ever heard. Chemistry-wise, I would think that a ph drop would cause skeleton breakdown, not an alk spike.

Seems to happen every month or so a branch or two will bubble up just the tips. Weird thing is there will be polyps comming out of bubble and when bubble goes away theres new growth.

I had a green slimer that it happened to a couple years back. I poked at the bubble and it broke. The tissue then grew over the area and the coral was fined. It appeared to me to be some sort of infection in the tissue. Dunno.

FWIW I was not having any issues at all in my tank and the coral along with the rest in my tank were doing fine otherwise.

The only other coral that I know of with that type of behavior is frogspawn. It will sometimes bubble out its tissue before putting out new growth.
