Hey everyone I am currently on the route to starting my first saltwater aquarium. My first tank that I am aiming to have for around a year or two is a 32 gallon Coralife. I plan on having a pair of clowns, a yellow watchman goby, a fire fish or two, a cleaner shrimp, a cardinal fish, and of course your standard live rock and coral. Once I move out of my apartment in a year or two i was planning to upgrade in tank size, but my real reason for the post was wondering if I would be able to have adequate space for a squamosa clam thrive properly in my 32 gallon tank. Dimensions of the tank are 20.2 x 21.9 x 21.5 inches.

Clams don't need "space" but they do need food, calcium and alkalinity. Clams in small tanks will need dosing set up to maintain parameters and help them grow.

Squamosas grow fast. I could see a properly cared for squamosa out growing a 32 gallon tank in a few years.

Is there perhaps a smaller species you would recommend until I upgrade?

Go with a deresera they stay smaller. And fire fish unless u get a pair they'll fight.

If you go with a squamosa then be prepared to rehome it if your plans for an upgrade fall threw. Also, tridacna deresa was the fastest growing clam I've raised and they get massive. Either way, without an upgrade your clam will outgrow the bio cube. I'd say you have a couple years with a clam in a bio cube.

Maxima and crocea are much slower growing. You could likely keep one for many years.
