I have folks tell me that I cant touch my sand and that it will stir nasty stuff into the water column while others have told me I need to vaccum it each week. Now I am pretty confused as what to do; so I ask on a shallow sand bed, do I clean it or dont I?

:attention:

May I ask how shallow? That is where the change happens. If it is beyond a certain fepth it can start to trap stuff due to the way a dsb works. I can tell you I have 1.5" and never vacuum the sandbed. I do however stir up parts at times if it is out of place due to the clowns.

There is a wonderful video on the vivid aquarium website about cleaning our reeftanks that I think everyone should watch. Vivid is one of the sponsors so check it out.

I have one that's about ~1.5" deep and I have tons of dwarf cerith, nassarius, and one fighting conch to shift the sand. Also, the mp10 in nutrient transport mode helped me pushed all the detris that is stuck in the dead spots into the overflow.

My sand bed is barely deep enough to cover the bottom in some parts and as deep as half an inch in others. I tried to keep it really shallow but with MP40's in the tank I decided to switch to starboard and not worry about it anymore.

Sand sifting goby is the way to go. But if you have fine grain sand it might make your tank cloudy a lot of times.
