Hey guys. I’ve just tried starting a new tank using prime & stability & they’re making my ammonia tests go green/grey? Has anyone has this before? I’m using tap water in my tank and trying to start the cycle with the two but this is the ammonia reading I get. But when I test my tank that I’ve used the API quick start it’s fine and tests perfect.

And please stop using tap water it’s a bad thing to start with and products like this don’t remove chemicals or water additives and doesn’t cover anything. Buy an RODI, get water from a local fish store, or even distilled is better than tap this applies to every tap water as it’s treated with lots of additives in developed nations or in undeveloped countries it’s not and not safe to drink or put in a fish tank. Using tap water can lead to many issues down the line like nuisance algae, unhappy corals, etc. so it’s best to avoid them to begin with.

So how do I know how my ammonia is? I’m sooo confused and I don’t want to add my turtle/fish if I’m not sure of the levels

Turtle? Is this a freshwater tank? I think so.…as turtles aren’t kept by saltwater hobbyists and many are protected species in most places. Ideally you want to get another test kit like the one that they recommend or you will have inaccurate results.

I’ve been told so many times distilled water is not better for live fish as it contains no minerals? I live in aus and the tap water isn’t that bad in my area. My turtle is currently in tap water with API quick start and conditioner and he’s been just fine but this is my first time owning a tank so I’m stressed.

If this is a freshwater tank yes you can use tap water. This is a saltwater tank forum so I assumed you were talking about a saltwater tank. For a freshwater tank tap or distilled is fine it’s best to add minerals back to distilled but you can still use it in a freshwater tank. It’s okay! I recommend joining Facebook groups that are about turtles and freshwater fish as well as look at YouTube.
