I've recently spun up my tank again, this time adding chaeto and also have Munnid isopods! My water params have been good and steady. It has been running for a few months now. I've been wondering, if I manage the chaeto, wouldn't I be able to not do water changes? Or are there other things that need to be replenished? Right now, I've been monitoring my nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia (along with temp and sal.). I have a 32g biocube. I've heard it's really only doable with larger tanks, but just curious if it is possible with this setup? Right now, it's fish only, and I'm looking to make the move shortly to adding corals... Would that change this discussion?

Nutrients are not the only (or even the main) reason to do water changes. There are lots of ions that organisms such as chaeto and corals take out of the water that they need (iron, manganese, vanadium, etc.), and things they release into the water you may not want (e.g., organic toxins).
