Hi, the stag (at least I believe it is a stag) I bought about two months ago seems to be showing signs of STN at the base. I am relatively new to SPS so would you guys recommend that I cut it at a level that shows healthy tissue? Should I just leave it and hope it will get better?

Can I cut at about the line where the STN is now? I figure that since that part will be glued it would not be a problem to catch abbot of stripped tissue...? Reason for this odd question is because if I need to make sure that no dead tissue remains in the new cut I would need to cut above the two first branches

Your best hope of saving it is to cut the frag and hope for the best. If you have to cut above and end up with 2 frags I would glue each one to a different plug. More important is finding out why it began to STN. You did not post any numbers and did not mention if you have had stability issues. Good luck.

Thanks James, much appreciated. I am doing the Triton method so parameters are all stable with Alk at 7,8 (Hanna), Cal at 450ppm (Salifert), Magnesium at 1380 (Triton), phosphate at 0,02 (Hanna and Triton) and Nitrate at zero (Salifert). I can never get Nitrate readings...

These corals were in quarantine for 6 weeks and they are never too happy with that. After that they went into the tank and I detected flatworms (not on the stag) but I dipped them all weekly in coral RX for 6 weeks and got rid of the flatworms, but the corals were not too happy...

If you haven't seen any receeding recently and that is from when you first got it, you can just leave as is. As long as algae doesn't take ahold it will recover that area. Now if its still receeding then need to find out why. Usually there is a reason and alk too high for the relative nitrate/phosphate can be a culprit. Keeping alk closer to 7 might help. Carbon can never hurt as well if your not running it already.

Sounds like qt and dipping were the stressor events that led to the stn.

Yes, that is my thinking as well. Hopefully it will make it but it is not looking good I'm afraid.

Many thanks
