:ooh:OK so I'm at a cross roads here with which hinges to use to use on my new stand and canpoy build. i found some nice stainless euro hinges for $10 a piece, but i found nickel plated for a third of the price at $3 a piece. money is tight with the build I'm doing and saving at this time is a good thing. is there a huge time frame difference with the corrosion rates between stainless and nickel plated? any help with this from people with any experiences would be great!!!!:ooh:

Spend the money on the stainless. They will be a much better long-term way to go. I'm not sure just how reef safe Nickel corrosion is.

man it is just so much more $$!! i need 14 hinges for the new stand and hood.....$140 + shipping....AHHHH

has anyone used nickel plated before and had any luck?

Well I also can get cheap ones for now and slowly replace them with stainless. Just to shell out that much $$ sucks you are right!

Any thoughts on short term use??

Is this stand and hood something you plan to have for years to come? If so, figure on the cost of new hinges every couple of years and the compounded cost of the hinges, as well as whatever labor is required to replace them, with a full and stocked reef all around them. Also, is some of the nice nickle plating peels or flakes off into your reef, is it reef safe? I know it just takes a smidge of copper. Don't know about nickel, but I don't think it's a positive element.

Yes this is the stand hood that I will gave the life of the tank. Just to get the tank done I want to get the cheap ones and with in a few months get the SS ones. I just need to get the extra $$ saved up or sell some equipment to get them now....lol

THAT I can understand! I'm on the same channel with you now!!!

if you have glass or a top on your tank you should be ok. but it you are going to leave the top open you will have problem in the future.

ok let me ask this... do you need to finish this project now??? or is it something like half those hinges will do till tax time (if you get money) or buy a few a month????

im going to get the cheap ones for now and change them as soon as i get the extra money

That's what I would do.
As long as you keep them clean and don't let corrosion build up and drop into the tank, you should be fine.

Oh, and don't dip them in the tank either.
