does anyone know what this thin, cheap, iron-on junk is that manufacturers use on biocube stands? i really don’t want to strip it and paint it.

Looks like cheap laminate over mdf.
This looks like what you want. It's called melamine. For most of my furniture projects, I use red oak plywood with red oak veneer. Looks great when you stain and clear coat.
Its a vacuum formed vinyl laminate. Unless you have the equipment to install it with, getting replacement vinyl won't do you much good. Best bet would be to trim it off and replace with a veneer or paint it.

Is that a JBJ 28 stand? It looks just like mine with the silver pieces holding the top up.
Is the top piece that the tank sits on swollen? My tank had a small amount of water drip onto the top of the stand and the piece the tank sits on swelled up and looks like yours (where you see the brown area between the smooth top and smooth side).
