I recently picked up a 10' X 3' X 3' acrylic aquarium. My hubby and i are quite handy and have built stands for 200G level aquariums. Is there any reason we should not build a stand ourselves for this one? My plan was to use RocketEngineers design with vertical supports every two feet. Probably build with 2X6. Any input appreciated.

I think that would work just fine. The loading on that stand will exceed 6000 lbs when the sand, rocks, water, and weight of the acrylic are considered.

Can your floor handle that kind of weight?

Its going on our cement basement floor. I figure as long as there are plenty of horizontal members spreading all the weight out over the floor my builder says it will be fine. I was thinking about doing horizontal supports running front to back on the bottom to further distribute the weight.

The horizontal beams on the bottom will be very helpful. I had a 125 gallon steel stand on a cement basement floor that sunk through it. Lesson learned, not all basement floors are built to support an aquarium with four points of contact. I would have been fine if I placed the stand on 4x4s to distribute the weight more evenly .
