Hey guys,

I am moving into my new house in a month and I need to find a stand for my 17 gallon rimless Aquamax aquarium. The dimensions are 23.5 x 11.7. I calculated the weight should be about 250lbs. I am guessing I can't just go to Ikea and find a piece of furniture that I like and use that due to the weight right?

Thanks ahead

Used to have a standard 29g and stand we have was a book shelf from Ikea- no issues with it.

If you go that route look at the material and how it is made . The partical board is cheap and if it gets wet will swell and weaken . Look for solid wood furniture grade .

Plywood is actually stronger than solid wood. but for a stand this size it wouldn't matter.

If I might suggest look into the 80/20, one can make a really cool looking open stand if you do not have the equipment for working with wood. :)

Maybe in terms "stiffness" but that doesn't mean much for our purposes. plywood is made of multiple plys with grain that runs at right angles to adjacent plys, thus reducing the tendency to split along the grain and makes it stronger than hard wood. Hard wood also warps and "moves" more than plywood.

I build all of my stands out of plywood, never solid wood.

No not plywood . There's a big difference in plywood and partical board . Partical board is nothing more than glue and sawdust . Alot of cheap stands / cabinets are partical board .
