Anyone have a completely closed stand?

I'm working on putting a back panel and bottom to my stand. I'm curious about ventilation. I keep my house around 70 year round and my tank has screen tops. I have two heaters that work a good bit to keep it at 79.5 as is so I'm not too worried but would like some experience..

When I got my current project the stand looked wonderful! Until I looked inside it, it's closed all around and the evaporation cause mold wich caused the stand to go to the dump/project on hold. I'll get some pics when I get off of work.


IME Caleb , it's be better to put some place for the evaporation to go, if not it makes for a nasty problem.

Just a suggestion, I have seen member put louvered door on there front to circulate air. Or you could incorporate one or two louvered shutters in to the back and this would let the fresh air in to the cabinet.

I think the louvered doors would bug me I would think it would let light creep from the refugiam area. But I think the doors would look really nice that way.

You should also consider that having a completely closed cabinet that you will see a temperature increase. You could put a light barrier up to prevent light leakage from the lovured doors.

Well what I ended up doing is leaving an inch gap on the back panel for air to escape and their is a 2 inch hole for cords too. Plus I painted the back and bottom with kilz2 so that will help with any mildew issues.

I attached the back with Velcro so if need be I can take it off and cut another hole for a computer fan. Also I keep my house pretty cold so I'm not worried much about the temp with an open top display.

I'll report back

Wow, what a lucky tank. I would keep my tank at 76 degree if my house is at 70 degree year round....

Mine is completely closed. One side comes off for access (besides the front door) and I used a cabinet fan to keep the air moving. Been over a year and no problems.

It all came out super nice! I bought a anti vibration mat for the bottom which I love and looks amazing! And ordered a sweet motion senor led strip that will come in on Friday along with my apex wireless adapter. Ordering the apex next week.

Here is a picture of my cool led strip for my cabinet. I'm very pleased. It's motion activated and rechargeable. Plus the 3m sticky has a magnet attached so I can unmount it to charge or use somewhere else! Definitely worth the 18 dollars I paid.

Here is a better picture of the sump area. I ordered my apex today so it should be here Monday then I'll get a picture of my electrics board when it's done.

Right after installing bottom board, adding anti vibration mat, and back panel.

Sump and equipment back in place.

Also picked up this Ethernet adapter for my apex

Everything is coming along nicely.

I thought they had an app on the Apple Store for humidity / insulation for walls. The idea was you type your material and thickness (or associated values) and it would give you an idea of how much humidity or temperature it could handle. Maybe that could work for the inside of the stand if needed?
