Staring a new 40 gal tank

Hey guys. I'm fixing to start a 40 gal reef tank. I have bought nature's ocean live sand and dry rock to start. How long should I let the tank run before I can add fish or coral? Also i have read some other forums on the dry rock. They say to rinse with ro water is it ok the rinse with regular tap water or do I have e to rinse with ro water? What is the difference?

If you have RO water around to make your saltwater, it definitely helps to rinse your dry rock in RO, if not, tap water wont really be a deal breaker since its dry rock anyway

Ok thanks. This is my first time starting a tank from scratch. So I may ask a lot of questions lol. So once I get the rock, sand and saltwater in my tank. Do I need to add fish food to start the cycling process?

I would definitely rinse with RODI water (pick up a small jug from your LFS if you don't have a system yet). The problem is that dry rock as is, is quite high with phosphates prior to rinsing and when you rinse with tapwater (which is generally loaded with minerals that produce phosphates) then it kind of defeats the purpose. I would play it safe as for minimal cost/hassle you can have piece of mind.

I'm in the middle of my cycle now

I bleach cured my rock first.

Then I dosed pure ammonia to 2ppm and dose bacteria daily
