So I have 2 AI primes and I just changed up the lighting a bit. I reduce what they call blue which was around 85% down to 50% or so. I left the deep blue as the highest. I feel that there is too much red/green/white in that straight blue color and it was adding to my algae problems.

My tank is doing well. I started doings amino acid once daily about two months ago. See pic below for brand:

I have been traveling for work a lot lately and had my father watching my tank. I gave him strict instructions about dosing the amino acids. Telling him to only use 1 drop each day. I came home from my trip to find that I had a hair algae out break on the sand. I asked if he added one drop or if he had dosed a complete dropper full. He is sticking to his guns and saying one drop, but i think he did a complete dropper full. Either way i got 2 conchs and they have cleaned up the sandbed.
For some reason I cannot keep sps to save my life, but the soft corals are flourishing. I tried keeping a nem and it died after 1 month. I fed him and he seemed happy, but my clowns never paired with it.
I still have some hair algae growing on my rock so i am going to cut back on my aminos to once per week and see how it goes. Below are some pics that I took tonight.

Nice! Keep us updated. How about a picture with the day lights.

These pics are still kind of blue because the lights are ramping down. I have had a self induced issue of late. I decided to bring my dkh up to a higher level so maybe, just maybe I could keep SPS in this tank with all of my LPS. What resulted was very happy SPS and extremely unhappy Acans and Lobo. I finally said screw it and will just live with the LPS. It's not worth risking the majority of my livestock to make a few frags happy.

Looking good. It is indeed a fine balance to keep both happy!

What did you take your Alk up to and why do you think you need to increase it for SPS? SPS corals are perfectly happy in the 7-8 range. I keep a mixed reef (mostly SPS though) and can say the main things that SPS like is lots of light and flow but mostly stability.

Looks like that coral ate a crab in the last photo.

It was at 7. I raised it to 8.5 over the course of 2 weeks. I noticed a huge improvement in my montis but saw a sharp decline in my Acans. My frogspawns were doing well. I have found them to be extremely sensitive to changes in alk. So that is a head scratcher to me. I also have a 30 gal so everything happens quickly, which can be a problem for sps since maintaining stability (chemistry) is so important.

Try it at about 8 and see if you have better luck. I started SPS in a 25g and had great luck with it.
