Hey guys!

I am starting a 30 AIO innovative marine tank. I'm going to make it a clown fish tank. How many clowns should i add? how much is to much? or not enough? also what media and filtration should i put in the back to help?

Thanks

Your options are really either 1, or a mated pair.

Otherwise you would need 6-7+ and that tank just isn’t big enough for that

I planned on getting 7 baby clown fish. you dont think that is possible?

7 baby clownfish become 7 adult clownfish...... I don’t think the tank is big enough for 7 adult clowns

Easy to say “I will rehome them” but do you really want to “grow out” 7 clowns, dump all 7, and then what? get 7 more?

I have to agree. Keeping multiple clowns in a small tank, say 60 gallons, is hard enough but a 30 would be super risky.

If you bought 7 baby clowns from the same clutch.. within a year you will end up with 2 or 3. You will find the rest on the floor from being chased mercilessly.

Some people get away with it for a short while. Some get away with it because they have several anemones in their tanks. Some get away with it because the original pair have a nice attitude and are so large they do not feel threatened by a tiny pair. But in the end there is always a chance a pair will try to dominate in smaller tanks no matter what you do.

I guess some people just get lucky with their situations and success has to be based on years. Not months.

I would recommend a maximum of two and stick to the percular/ocellaris. Unless you don’t want any other fish in that size tank, then you can go with the other complexes.

Here’s my 2 cents...if you really wanted to do it, then do it! Try it, who knows you’ll be successful doing it in a small tank. I’d rather do things , even if it is against all odds rather than wondering, “what if?”. People will tell you things, “poor innocent clownfish”, “it is a waste”, “it is impossible”, so on and so on. You only know the real answer if you do. So go on...and good luck!

Like many others in this thread, I also recommend that you add only one pair of clownfish. There is some flexibility with a 30g if you want to add one of the larger species of clownfish. Additionally, I would wait on the anemone(s) until the tank stabilizes (usually about 6+ months in once you get past the "uglies" phase). Good luck!

for those following i just went with 2. im picking up 3 BTA this weekend to get things going

Has your tank even cycled yet bud? 2 weeks is probably a little soon to getting Anemones and such? What are your parameters. Please don't put Anemones in the tank yet if it hasn't gone through the ugly phase and has been stable save some money and some lives.

the tank cycled for 4 months..... all good.

Stability is key, just keep those numbers stable!

Be careful with flow and new anemones. They tend to wander or sometimes not. Either way they can end up in power heads. It is almost like something you have to experience before you take it seriously. Lol
