Starting a new tank

Welcome to Reef2Reef! You plan is definitely doable. You avoid some of the risks from live rock and miss out on some of the biological diversity.

Yo yo Angeljr......Welcome!
Starting with dry rock and sand has certainly been a proven method for success. No matter what type of system you plan to start there will be a different set of trials and variables to manage. As a new reefer myself I can offer little advice aside from, as others have said, do your research. Set some goal for what you want to achieve with your system and determine the best design and startup plan from there. You are off to a great start asking questions here. R2R will be an invaluable asset in your quest for knowledge. Try posting questions in specific forums for a more directed response from some of the best minds here.
