So I'm starting up a new tank, a 250 gallon after having to take down the 110. I had some brush like algae that was basically permanently established. Fluconazole, algaefix only took it back for a while. I'm hoping to start fresh, but I am cycling my new rock (bleached and acid washed) with some of the same water. Is this inviting trouble. I've had the rock cycling for a month or so, I'd hate to restart it, but if the concensus is that, I can do it. But I also have some lps which survived, so I'm not going to avoid every spore, just hopefully most.

Anyone else have some stories or experiences starting a tank to avoid the most pernicious algaes.

Thanks

Hopefully your methods of nutrient import & export when you start the new build will prevent the pernicious algae from being able to take hold at all.

It’s possible there are dormant spores of that particular algae that you’ve transferred to the previously dead rock by using water from the infested tank. It’s nearly impossible for us to avoid any algae getting into our systems. Nature finds a way.

But, if you make sure to provide an environment in the new tank where you control the nutrients and, most importantly, make sure other things (large refugium or a reactor with macro algae, good skimmer, regular water changes in the tank’s young stage, healthy bacteria population, etc.) outcompete any possible bad algae, it shouldn’t matter.

Also, until you have corals in the tank, I’d suggest not running your display tank lighting very high, taking everything slowly, and definitely utilize macro algae as a means of nutrient export. That patience thing is the hardest part for me, but this stuff has worked for me.

What sort of filtration system will you be using? What is your plan, as far as stocking, nutrient control, any specific method, etc.?

Thanks, I have a big skimmer (reef octopus 220 with the upgraded DC pumpl, refugium with a h380, carbon/gfo reactor, 40w uv and an auto water changing station with bio pellet reactor if need be.

I think after 4 months getting the new tank ready it's psychological at this point. I have a build thread somewhere, but just was looking for some topical help on the starting as I am doing this tank right whatever the effort this time. I see so many completely algae free tanks, and I'm looking to start it out right and take care of any green algae at the first sight.

Stocking is light for a while, and I'll keep the lights down until I move the lps and the start up once I get coralline growing well.

Thanks, I think I'll continue on with the already cycled rock and watch things carefully
