Hey all!
I have had a couple of Reef and FOWLR tanks in the past so I guess I am not necessarily new however I have been out of the loop for a few years.
Long story short, I was renting for a few years and had kept my 29 cube (details below) at my parents house. Over the past year or so I have neglected some much needed maintenance mostly the lighting system and skimmer which are both hanging on by a thread. However, we just bought a new home and rather than pump the money into the old cube I decided to start fresh with something a little larger. I purchased a Red Sea Refer 250 Deluxe, not the best or as large as I wanted, but its what I could afford at the moment.
29G Cube (MJ1200, Cobalt 150w heater, JBJ 1/10 Chiller, Steves LED Kit with Typhoon Controller, Inkbird Temp Controller, AL115 Skimmer, BRS 5 stage RODI)
I have had trouble with my 29g and its DSB. Feel like it caused more issues over time than was valuable. Not sure if I should go shallow, deep again, or BB.
If I do go shallow or DSB, what do you think would be the best way to start a new system. Fresh sand, and a few cups of my existing sand mixed it. If I do sand I would rather it be mostly new since my sand is roughly 10 years old and has darkened quite a bit.
As far as transferring livestock how should I do this? I have roughly 60lbs of LR, with various LPS, and Softies, and Chromis and Black Ice Clown at the moment. Should I start the new RSR250 tank up with just sand and do a mini cycle before adding the my existing rock work piece by piece?
Right now I am just trying to figure out how to make the move as I wait for the tank to arrive. Additionally with the open top I feel like there will be quite a bit of evaporation. The room the tank is going in is an extension off the back of my house. No wet walls so I need to wrap my head around how to properly setup the ATO.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I still need to purchase a skimmer, and power heads and am open to suggestions.
