So after I cycle my tank which is a 75 gallon I’m wondering if I can start with a clown fish and two bangi cardnels? Or would that be too much?

Based on Volume, yes you can. Do bear in mind often two Banggai will fight til death (like siamese fighting fish) as they can change sexes. Odd numbers are best (1 - 3 - 5 and so forth). Pajama cardinals do well as a pair
Acclimate well and feed sparingly at first

I don't see a problem adding those fish post-cycle. I would advise you to get your full stocking plan and map it out over time. Paying attention to territoriality and the need for an established tank.

I never knew that thank you for that knowledge, do you think system could handle three or it be better to do a royal gama?

Think vetteguy53081 meant "can't" when it comes to their ability to change sex.

I had to learn this the hard way. Get a confirmed Male/Famele pair, or get a single individual. Once they mature they pair off and ostracize other members of the school. So even if you get a few, there are some that are going to get picked on and kicked out of the group.

Want Cardinals? Go 1 or a guaranteed Male/Female pair.

Sexing Banggai Cardinals is very difficult. 1 small black dot on the cloaca near the anal fin= female, 2 black dots = male. Good luck spotting it lol if you mess up they will try to kill each other. Even if it is a male/female pair there is no guarantee they will pair. If you choose that route, make sure they are a mated pair or individual. Save yourself the trouble.

Also as a newbie always try to buy aquacultured fish. They are hardier to aquarium conditions and it's more ethical to wild caught species

This is why most people go Clownfish, they have the fortune ability to change sexes and pair.

Meant can based on fish you desire and did clarify odd numbers
I’ve had banggai last 9 years and great fish
Had trio and now have single for 6 years

You said they can change sexes. They can't.

Edited my post to clarify

Also I am curious also as a noob who has a Banggai Cardinal, did your group of 3-9 always school through your many years of experience?

I read that in the wild they school when they are young, but eventually pair off and mate for life. Your schools always stuck together?

Feel like it might be relevant to the OP if they decide to purchase this animal down the road.
