Got the marineland 75 g reef ready tank. I have heard people put egg crate at the bottom of the tanks and then the substrate. Is there and advantage of doing this or is It better to go without eggcrate?

I've been doing it for years. In addition to protecting the glass from rock falls, it also serves to prevent pressure points when you put the rock in initially and I've also found it makes aquascaping easier as the rocks lock into the grid and don't slide around/shift as you put them in place. Its totally optional though.
