starting new tank

setting up my marine tank fish and live rock only for now any tips would be great on a buget so cant spend loads going from tropical to marine cant wait

What size tank are you getting/already have? the bigger the better! I just started my tank in December so I'm not the most experienced, but what I can say is that when they say be patient THEY ARE RIGHT!!! Before I even started to buy anything, I did 4 months of just research on what you will need and what the cheapest but safest way to do it is and I haven't even spent 1000$ on my tank and I'm 3 months into my tank with a full house of fish! Also, I have found that the cheapest way to buy salt is to go to Dr. Fosters and Smith website and get the 200-gallon mix of salt and get it on auto delivery. That is an easy 20$ that I saved. Lastly, give it at least two weeks between the time that you set up your tank, and you get your fish/coral. You need time for the tank to clear up and settle down before you can add anything to it other than snails/crabs.

Okay, so you have a pre-existing freshwater tank that you are converting to marine? What size is the tank? What sort of fish are you interested in?

In some cases it's best to go to your LFS or Craigslist and try to get a complete used setup as that way you get your mechanical equipment together (instead of being nickel and dimed to death by buying it peacemeal). I made the mistake of buying a tank kit from petsmart when I first started and when all was said and done the only stock equipment I was still using was the tank itself and the hood.
