Starting out with a coral qt

Hi all! Seems like a lot of new forum members are already going with tanks, but I'm not there yet.

I wandered into a shop last week, and ended up visiting a couple more times since then just trying to soak in what I could. I've also gone off the deep end, watching most of the 52 weeks of reefing series on youtube this weekend.

I'm currently at the planning/budgeting stage, and I'm leaning toward starting in a slightly unconventional way, as you may gather from the thread title. I've never kept fish myself, so I want to get my feet wet in what I think is a conservative way. I'm leaning toward doing a coral only QT to start that might house primarily LPS frags.

Any advice is appreciated & I look forward to joining the awesome community yal have here!
 
Here's what I've got so far
Nuvo 20g with something like a Kessil A80
If anyone has experience with the stuff that comes with the Nuvo 20g, I'd wondering if there's sufficient filtration/flow.

I'm also considering spending a bit extra for an osmolator 3155, which may be repurposed in the future but may help with stability in the smaller size

Beyond that, I'm budgeting for heaters, water and salt, dipping stuff, and racks

I am running a 20g Nuvo Fusion for my Coral and Invert QT. I am still trying to get the ropes of it.

1 - Smart ATO Mirco (great for the smaller tank, just make sure the sensor it blocked off from the light otherwise it will keep running)
2 - Media Baskets (1 for each chamber)
1 - Reactor, probably not going to use
1 - IM skimmer (works okay, I run after feedings only)

I was planning on having it solely as an invert/coral QT and just have egg crate propped on some pvc, but I think I need to add sand and some LR as there does seem to be some stability issues and hopefully that will help clear it up. I use a 32gal Biocube for fish QT and that seems significantly more stable.

Ah, that's perfect! Seems you're just who I need to talk to, haha
Novice question - I was under the impression that waste from just corals would be less pronounced, stemming from coral zooxanthellae symbiosis
When you say there seems to be some stability issues, does that mean there is insufficient biological filtration without sand/LR?

It's a valid question,but I am in no way an expert.

The water column on a properly cycled tank should be able to handle the bio-load with some mechanical filtration especially at the time of stress when the corals slime up. Filter sock will do, but the ones that come stick with the Fusion series block up quick so I run with the media baskets and some filter pads on the top for quick and easy swapping the day after feeding.

For starters...
1. Use RODI water, either from a LFS or if you have an RODI.
2. Be sure that the tank is properly cycled, you can jump start by using BioSpira or similar product.
3. ATO's are important on smaller tanks for salinity stability. (Am serious about the Mirco one I have, I have 2 and they both work great and only $130)
4. min 10% WC per week or 20% every other week, you may want to do the weekly change to help keep parameters in check.
5. start off slow, a couple of cheap starter corals, and read up on acclimation and dipping.

Things to note...
1. Smaller the volume, the faster things go wrong...
2. PH swings with photo periods, so far I have not been able to avoid or mitigate this in my coral QT because of not having a sump or a fuge to run opposite lighting schedule. I have gotten it balanced in my DT within .15. and it is fairly stable in my fish QT where I rarely turn the lights on. Others may have better input on this.
3. Alk will lower as minerals are consumed, water changes and dosing either 2 part or other bottled supplements/buffers is the only way to maintain (please anyone correct me here if I am wrong)

The Biological filtration seems to be no issue in the water column and once piece of LR the size of my hand that was seeded in my DT's sump. The water I used to start the tank is cycled water from my DT that was nursed back up to 8 dkh alk through several water changes before I added in my first corals.

So far it is my experience that I am only getting fluctuations in PH and dissipating Alk in the smaller tank. The ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates seems to be fine and I recent had 14 corals, 2 feather dusters and 2 peppermint shrimp in the tank.

My fish QT is bare bottom as well but the water column doesn't see the swings with PH that is large in part to the fact I am not running the lights on the fish QT, Alk is also more stable in the bare bottom fish QT. Seems logical to me since there is not as much calc and mag demands in the fish QT. I have 4 fish currently in QT, 1 Royal Gramma, 1 Melanarurus Wrasse, 1 Yellow Watchman Goby and a Small Foxface Lo, in the 32 gallong bio cube and it's been 5 days and still no issues with bio-load even after feeding. The only thing I do is put a filter pad in before I feed then pull it out the morning after to prevent nitrite, nitrate and phosphate build up.

I believe the coral QT has PH fluctuations in step with the lighting schedule and Alk just drops from the SPS and LPS corals and that drop is what has caused me to lose some shrimp and have some color loss on the various corals...specifically Zoas and SPS. Everything still had polyp extension so at least I knew they were alive. I moved all the frags to my DT which is much more stable and everything is starting to come back.

In my DT, I would do a 20% WC every 2 weeks and I was battling low ALK and since I started a 5gpd AWC my Alk has slowly been raising and the corals look happier for it. So stable Alk is definitely key and probably more so than PH. I have bought and am probably going to start dosing the big 3 in the DT by the end of the month.

Unfortunately, short of testing daily or 2x per day for a little while it is hard to get a handle on what it is doing and corrective measures for Alk would be as note above.

One side note...I do plan to upgrade the stock return pump for the Nuvo 20 Fusion to a Cobalt MJ1200 for better flow through the tank and not depend on just the MP10 for pushing water. One of the Reps at BRS suggested it to help increase flow without having to have the power head on Max.

So I wouldn't say I am the one to talk to but I will be happy to share my successes and failures.

Both LPS and SPS create skeletal structures and i think is really based on how much you have in the tank. Someone else may have a better answer.

My first LPS was an Acan and a candy cane. Both are doing well i have since added other LPS and SPS and i have determined that the water changes alone don't keep up with the 20 or so LPS and SPS frags i have.

If you want to not worry so much about calc, alk and mag, i would say look into zoas, palys, shrooms and cloves. You may be able to just keep it going with water changes.

But as i have said, i am no expert, and others may have more accurate information.

that may be the most prudent thing to do for now. I've changed up my plan slightly & grabbed a plain 29g glass box on the way home. I figure the difference can go toward proper gear as you suggested & we'll see what can be repurposed later
 
29g glass boxes were onsale at my local petco thru august $1 per gallon...

*Welcome to Reef2Reef @esse!* I would suggest putting something in your tank for beneficial bacteria to thrive on.Maybe some dry rock to ensure that nothing undesirable it added.Your LPS are going to need Nitrates to stay healthy.

Hey there! I've got a little update & then a couple questions..

I've been grabbing parts piecemeal & while it's a total mess:eek::eek:, I'm learning how everything works. This one is a 10g from petco's $1/g sale, and I have a 29g tank that I'll move the stuff to soon. The tank is probably going to continue looking a little dumpy/utilitarian, and my main concern is staying safe with the water & electricity.

Today I received parts for a media reactor that I'm looking to use for chaeto.
  • First new question has to do with hose barb on the pump that's in tank. I've got it on the right there, a sicce syncra 1.0, which I think has the correct size for 1/2'' tubing, but the fit seems a bit loose. It seems to work, but I'm sure yal know of a better way to get a secure fit
  • Second is the return hose - what's the best practice on securing/shaping the hose to return to the tank?
Edit: for reference, here's a pic for that first question. You can see the hose fits pretty loosely on the pump:
