What’s up everyone! Starting up qt again for my new tank. I have a Flame Hawkfish, Firefish, Aurora Goby, and a Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse. Last time I ran a qt I took 10 days to ramp up Copper Power at intervals of .25ppm to reach the therapeutic level of 2.50ppm. I know it’s been mentioned here that 10 days is too long.

What should I do? .5ppm per day for 5 days? What’s best? Any fish in my list I need to be cautious with?

Thanks for the help.

Copper shouldn’t be ramped up but rather achieved at therapeutic level within 48 hours at level 2.25-2.5 using coppersafe or at.50 using cupramine and monitored with a reliable copper test kit such as Hanna brand for a full 30 days, no less
Increase oxygen with copper treatment and monitor ammonia levels also

So roughly what, 1.0ppm per day to get
to therapeutic level?

I’ve never ramped up copper power. Full dose from the get go. No problems. Copper power is chelated copper, meaning it’s bound to something else and not in its ionic form like cupramine, so it is more “gentle” if you will. Now having said that I have never kept a wrasse. From what I understand wrasse are more sensitive to copper and copper power should be kept close to 2 vs 2.5 (but never below 2 since it won’t be therapeutic).

If your fish don’t show active disease of distress there is nothing wrong with tamping up copper if it makes you feel better. But you don’t need 10 days. 2-3 days at the most. Man, who has time for 10 days :)

Last time I observed for a full week. Then took 10 days to get to therapeutic levels and then 30 full days copper. Was very nervous for the first time. I had a Flasher wrasse and he did well, but I don’t want to go that long again.

Here’s my routine:

30 day (after last visible sign of illness) of copper power at 2.5

7 days x 2 rounds of Prazipro

45 min Formalin bath

Display tank

This regimen does not cover internal parasites (If I see evidence of it I’ll try to treat it but I don’t think it’s a huge problem) and I have no knowledge on how the other medications affect wrasses.

This regimen should prevent/treat: Velvet/Ich/Brook/External Uronemia/Flukes/Blach Ich.

I'm also in the NO RAMP camp. Especially if the fish are already infected. I just dose copper power up to 2.5 straight away. It doesn't do any good until it is at therapeutic level, so if fish are sick, best to get it there quick.

I've done this with several flasher wrasses without issue. Only time I had issue with a flasher wrasse was when I was still using cupramine. which I won't use anymore.

stick with copper power or coppersafe and you will be fine. no ramp necessary.

I would avoid doing that. Take a day or two to get too full dose copper power so you are at full dose within 3 days of getting the fish.

With Coppersafe and Copper Power, virtually ALL cases of "copper toxicity" are actually due to uncontrolled disease due to having ramped up too slowly, or using too low of a dose. True copper toxicity just doesn't happen with these products. Cupramine is a bit harsher, but it is the copper citric acid meds that were the real problem, and those are mostly sold in Europe now.

Thanks Jay. Last of the fish were added at 3pm today. Should I start copper this evening? I guess I’m asking if they need to be observed at all because we’ll be heading to bed. Probably a silly question.

Tomorrow is fine, just try to get to a full dose without going over, by Monday night or so.
