I just started using Zeovit on my reef tank. Tank has approx. 100 gals total water. Tank has been cycled for nearly 3 months with live rock, several fish, cleanup crew etc.

I started the Zeovit system a couple weeks ago and used Zeolite rocks, zeobak, Zeofood, and Zeostart. I followed the dosage on the bottles.
5 drops each of zeobak & Zeofood. 1 ml of zeostart.

The zeobak started to smell and I read to stop using it, so I did and started using a new bottle a few days ago. In the past 4 days theres a definite red film on the tank sides and what looks to be dino on the gravel. Is this a normal process to go through?

My nitarates have been high so I’ve done 3 35 gal water changes.

I don’t want this stuff to get out of control, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you read this page? Is your tank cycled? What rock did you use? Did you change the zeovit yet? (Every 6 weeks). That’s what reduces the ammonia and helps keep the bacteria stable. What reactor are you using? Need more info if you can, please.

Actually I just read it about an hour or so ago. I’m going to stop using the Zeofood and reduce my zeobak and zeostart to 2 drops and .5ml respectively. I’ll see if that helps. I originally read the zeo literature from the BRS website but this article is quite different.

As for the rock, I have 100Lbs of live Florida rock. It came with 8 clams, sponges, and 3 sea squirts living on it. I also have LPS brain corals and some very small SPS living in the rock.

I originally cycled the tank with Dr Tim bacteria and the marine pure in May. After it cycled I put the live rock in and let it cycle for 2 weeks before adding anything. I then added a clean up crew and 3 small fish.

I started the Zeovit as stated before 2 weeks ago but once the Zeobak started to smell I stopped. Just started again 4 days ago.

I got a bunch of frags which are in the tank now, which is why I’m concerned.

I’m running
Trigger Triton 34 sump
Omega 180i skimmer
Zeovit reactor approx 65gal/hr tapped off main
2 bricks marine pure
.5l zeo carbon in mesh bag
Iwaki MD55RLT 1100 gal/hr
2 T5 Blue Plus and Coral Plus
Kessil AP700
Neptune APEX
1 Gyre
2 Tunze Nanostreams

I'm reluctant to give advice to people using black box methods like zeovit that I cannot tell what is being added to the aquarium.

That said, dinos are apparently a risk of low nutrient systems, and I'm not sure how (or if) zeovit gets around the issue.

IMO, the risk of dinos is a good enough reason to not try to keep ULNS systems.
