Startup question

I started a new tank a couple weeks ago. New to the hobby I didnt know much and a friend helped me start my tank. He started with 30% of his water from a partial water change.. Is this normal practice of starting a new tank? Is it considered bad? tank looks great and no issues I just am curious.

Welcome to R2R and congrats on the new tank! It is not unusual to use water from an established tank.
