When buying used equipment skimmers, return pumps, power heads, etc. you don’t know the aquarium it came out of so how do you sterilize your used equipment. Main concern is introducing a parasite into display or purchasing something that was used in a quarantine system and introducing copper that was not disclosed before buying. Thanks

I toss them in a bucket with ro/vinegar solution overnight and that’s it. The fresh water kills pretty much every pest, the vinegar breaks down anything that calcifies and I don’t worry about copper residue on equipment. The amount would be so incredibly minuscule that it wouldn’t impact anything in the tank. Especially not after a good rinsing. I use around a cup of vinegar per gallon of ro water.

For pumps and submersible equipment, I would think a vinegar or citric acid bath (full strength) would work perfectly. That would pretty much sterilize anything.
