So I have been battling cyano for a month or two now in two tanks. I just recently changed out my RODI filters and the TDS read 0 but before it read 1-2. I will get you phosphate numbers soon but what can I do to remedy this issue. Hydrogen peroxide? I prefer not to do waterchanges.

Calculate your actual water volume after displacement from the rock, including your sump volume. Buy Chemi-clean. Dose it exactly as the instructions say. Say goodbye to Cyano. You will need to do water changes though, no way around it.

i have chemi clean as a last resort. i would have to mix up about 60 gallons of sw in order to do both tanks

Why would you need to mix up 60 gallons? Or do you mean you have tank volume of 60 gallons. As a last resort chemi clean is great. Make sure to allow your skimmer to overflow thereby keeping up gas exchange in your tank.

That’s very true.

It does give you some breathing space if cyano is beginning to smother and kill corals. It does give new hobbyists an additional safety net. Let’s be honest, we have all suffered with cyano at some point. Generally we over estimated our cyano problem.

I would have to mix about 60 gallons for 20% waterchange. my nitrate in the main display is 20ppm which I know is high and it has rarely ever been that high before. as well as phosphates are at .25 which I think I found the issue and will be taking care of that and the new tank probs has the same reason.

I'm battling cyano myself currently. My turf algae is finally dying and anywhere it is so is the cyano. I'm letting the cyano help me get rid of the turf algae. lol

@Dilan Patel
Please show us the cyano problem. You may be worrying over nothing. Are you 100% certain it is cyano? Have you used a microscope?

Chemiclean works fine, but the underlying problem can trigger dino in response to the sudden removal of the slime in my experience.

That underlying issue thing has to be dealt with. Long term, I’ve found A-Balance from KZ actually works great. It doesn’t magically make the red slime go away, but over time it just ceases to be a problem. I’d recommend it in conjunction with a stable, appropriately clean nutrient environment.

I can post pics when I get home of the tanks. I am pretty sure it is cyano and not dino...but I have yet to look under a microscope.

What do you guys think. The first 4

any thoughts guys still battling.
Can we go back a couple steps?
Is your rodi good?
How old is the tank?
What food are you feeding the fish?
Any coral foods?
Aminos?
Carbon dosing?
Have you checked the ph in the am PM?
Have you tried any bottled bacteria?
Looks like you have sps on sand, that flow should be pretty darned strong. Is it?
Is you’re sump funky?

i would use chemiclean but that only masks the issues as well as adds chemicals to my tank which is the last thing i wanna do.

so the 180 has been up for years about 2 years as a reef though. i did change the rodinfilter and now reads 0tds. i feed pellet food 4 times a day with ocxasional frozen. i feed offen since i have wrasses and tangs to keep happy. i also feed nori. i dont feed coral food now due to me bein partially lazy as well as th cyano problem. i do daily dose acropower. i use a debitrator to rid my tank of nitrates and keep them at 0 which it does when i keep the bacteria fed if i dont forget to feed it. have not tried bottled bacteria in the 180. i got two gyre 250 i have them turned to 60 percent because i just added nudis to the tank about a month ago and am slowly ramping them back to 100 percent. theg are random and there is a ton of flow. the sunp just has detritus as normal but in the process of fixing some stuff i wanna get done before i go to schoolandget busy.

I had a mild case of cyano for about 1 month 50g total water

Manually removed as much as I could daily

Fed less still 2 times a week just WAY LESS

Increased flow

Cleaned my sump of Detritus.

No I have been free of cyano for about 3 weeks

The reason I got it I believe is that my phosphate and nitrate tanked and I started to feed more bad idea on my tank now I dose nitrates and phosphates if I have to

Didn’t to a water change during the cyano or after haven’t done one in 5 months.

I would totally just use chemiclean!
dilan,i have delt with cyano on and off in my tanks for 30 years.had it in dirty tanks had it in very clean (0 nitrates 0 phos. 0000000's) ones. over all these years I have ALWAYS used chemiclean at 1/2 strength to kill off the slime while I work on the nutrient issue.i have never seen an ill effect to any livestock.yea the skimmer goes crazy for a few days but the cyano goes away in a few days and rairly returns.if it does I just do another 1/2 dose and that takes care of the problem .when you finally get tired of looking at it TRY CHEMICLEAN!it works with no lasting effects that I have ever seen.
