What are diatoms
They're dirty little micro algae often appearing brown and grouping together in a mess... the long filamentous algae you see here together with my dirty diatoms is GHA (green hair algae) the gnarly film on my back glass is both GHA and cyanobacteria. Recently had a sea cucumber die after purchase and push my tank into a cycle. Added bacteria and daily water changes to get the ammonia out.

Almost any cycle is going to have diatoms and cyanobacteria. Proper tank maintenance, lighting and filtration will take care of them for you. For now sit back and enjoy the show that is cycling. What ie your ammonia contributer to start your cycle? All dry rock or seeded with some live?
