Stink bug

So I’ve started narrowing things down.

My ORP is a concern of mine.

Anyone have any input to what could be the cause of this?

I’m not too familiar with what ORP does. But maybe my buddies over at the #reefsquad could help us out.

I’d say bad sensor off hand. Kinda impossible for orp to dip like that I think.
Could be somthing happing to cause the sensor to fail as well.

Sensor is pretty new. Maybe needs a cleaning? Not sure if i’m suppose to clean the apex orp probe or not. Kinda weird how it’s following a pattern though.

Nothing really. Will dosing brs 2 part play a role in orp?

According to Randy Holmes-Farley: "What about pH? pH can impact the ORP readings in aquaria. Often, ORP goes down as pH rises. A typical aquarium ORP reading will change on the order of 59 mv/pH unit. The easiest way to understand this is to simply think of pH as a measure of hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, and to think of H+ as being on the side of the oxidizers. In reality, H+ doesn't usually oxidize things itself (though it can), but more typically it can hype up other oxidizers, like oxygen, making them much more potent. So during the course of a 24-hour day in a reef aquarium, ORP will vary as pH and O2 also vary."

So if you're dosing at the same time as those changes - that may explain it (if your probe is near where your 2 part is exiting).

Did anything else change? Added iron supplement for the cheato? Uv bulb aging(think they have a 12 month life expectancy)? Not sure how much o2 becomes h202 with these to know if that would even have an effect.

I occasionally get bugs like lady bugs and moths in my sump because my tank room is in the basement. I never really worry about it.

Probes are located in return sections from my display, the first section of my sump.

I dose into the display as of now until I get around to hooking up my Dos.

My light bulb could be replaced. Not sure if that would mess with the orp though.

So h202 dosing would bring orp down?

Also dosed calcium at 3:00 and it has triggered the drop..

H202 is a powerful oxidizer would raise oxidation potential then drop when it dissipates or under goes reduction.

Stink bugs secrete nasty pheromone like chemicals, especially when they are killed. I’d run some carbon and personally I’d do a series of water changes.

Actually stink bugs produce harmful and even deadly toxins to fish but not to corals this is bc of their outer shell holding in the toxins located in the bladder that is meant to digest their food which just so happens to be a deadly chemical to a fish if eaten recommend a lid definitely and pest control to help get rid of them so yea just a little tip and heads up

Do you spray any insecticide on the outside of your home to fend them off? Perhaps the bugs have some residue on them, dutifully delivering it to your tank.
nothing like this.

lid should be here soon. It was crushed against a mp40 this time. they just come outta no where.. will look into the pest control. might be overkill for the occasional stink bug but hopefully my lid will solve the issue.

lots of debate on this subject it seems.

assuming all of variables that come into play like time in tank, did it release the chemical, ontop of water or submerged, how much is actually harmful, does it in fact need to be ingested..

lots to think about and everyone has valid points
