Hello guys so my 525xl is recently developing STN over the past month.. I'm thinking either deficiency of trace elements or rust from sb reef lights mount..?? I need your guys input.. 90% sps slow STN from base up. I have attached my parameter log. i did have a spike of nitrates and phosphates about a month ago 50 ppm nitrates 0.4 phosphates. I dosed a little too much kno3 and have been slowly dosing nopox recently and brought down the levels in about one week to 5 ppm no3, 0.015 po4. Ph has been 7.9-8.1. Please help wife angry lol

ARRRRG!
Any PH swing?
How's the flow?
Did the frags go in close to the same times?

Try dipping in Coral Rx, I've had that happen on a few monti's and Acros. Clipped what I could and dipped. Came back to life in a couple weeks for me.

Flow is wild in there.. I also run a co2 scrubber that needs new media.. so maybe a small ph drop from 8.1 to 7.93 over time I would say. Frags have been in there for about the same time seems like they're all being affected as we speak.

Sounds like a good idea I'm gonna have to buy some... I haven't changed my water for about 2 months either... hmm??

I should be receiving hw reef salt today I'm going to change about 30 gallons and see what happens as soon as I get it later today..switching from reef crystals

Are you able to identify any pest ? Dipping one or two in Bayers or coral RX will tell you .
High phosphates especially sudden rise if the acros are not used to can cause STN especially coupled with pH swing .
If no pests , I would just try and keep my parameters as stable as possible and resort to fragging above STN only after the parameters are stabilized and when the frags are no more stressed .

It can be from the rust but only way to know is to do a triton test .
Do you run carbon ?
I know people have lost acros in the past to rusted screws and magnets .If you know there's rust possibility , fix it ASAP and perform frequent water changes ..

Abhishek

I did notice some rust from the light stand I immediately elevated the lights as you can see now. I don't run carbon. As soon as I get my new salt I will perform a water change today. As far as Bayer dip can you recommend a dosage and how long I should dip for? I will run to Home Depot and buy some right now.

You have several items that can cause SPS trouble. Biggest I see is swings and the additives. Quick changes are the worst for SPS. As long as they are slowly acclimated, you can keep them in pretty terrible water, but those sudden swings are rough on them. Now you are going to change salt too which will change even more on these SPS that are already struggling. Be careful with too many changes and additives at once.

I would CoralRX dip and clip. Keep them in stable water. Avoid large changes.

If you are changing salts, I would ensure that you dose the new mix up to the same ALK/Mag as the current mix. Also, I would use a 50/50 split of the old salt mix and the new salt mix for the first several water changes.

Oh, and get that metal out of your water!

Hi Dave ,

I follow this thread on Bayers dip

https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/bayer-insecticide-as-a-coral-dip.100496/

Please be careful of the type of Bayers used ..
I never measure the amount and just pour it in to have a uniform white mixture .
Also ,have multiple baths after Bayers dip of 10 mins ready as you should make sure 100% that no bayer reaches the tank .
I would run carbon , perform water change ,keep parameters as stable as possible and send in for Triton test . All of these once you find out that you don't have pests ..
If you decide to run carbon ,please go slow as sudden absorption of chemicals can shock the already stressed sps .

Regards,
Abhishek

I just noticed two of these small round white worm like things on the side of the frag plugs, wondering if it's some pest of some sort

Sorry but it's not visible in the pic .
In any case ,try and dip in coral RX or Bayers which ever makes you comfortable to make sure .

Abhishek

I think people who use Bayers have some serious cojones lol I wouldn't trust myself haha. IME use less than recommended dosage for Coral Rx. Changing to nice salt may help the process.

At Home Depot buying some Bayers, also picked up some coral rx dip and carbon stay tuned

Dipped 90 percent of frags!! Worms, eggs, and who knows what else!!

The dipped frags.. should I dip them again in another week?

I would just wait and see. A couple weeks under observation will be good.
Crossing my fingers for ya haha

Hi Dave ,

Well you should give them rest for atleast 14 days .
You might need to dip them multiple times over the next 3 months to be pest free .
It's also advised to frag them off the frag plug and fix them on new frag plugs just to eliminate the possibility of eggs being laid on the frag plugs .
Also , with coral RX , I would be a little cautious as it's a little harsh on acros sometimes in my experience .Thays why I use Bayers . It's s personal preference .
You can look into Faina Marin's new dip too .

Great job

Abhishek

I really appreciate your input, I set them down on the bottom with little par around 100-150 I will dip again next week. Do you feel like the frags would get more stressed if they're encrusted around the plugs and I remove them off the plugs? I will try the bayer dip next, I only got 2 single packets of coral rx. By the way the frags look much happier right after the dip. It seems like the STN has slowed down if not stopped I'm quite surprised actually..

Well if they have encrusted ,I won't try and frag them now .Especially if you are already seeing improvements .
I would keep dipping them every 2-3 weeks for 3 months or so .
That's why I think bayer will be easy on your pocket too :)
