Dear all,

my 120G mixed reef is now running since 5 weeks, and corals as well as pair of clowns are doing great. So time for more fish I think. My must haves are a Zebrasoma flavescens and an Acanthurus pyroferus. I further would like to add a shoal of five Pseudanthias squamipinnis. To r3duce territorial aggression I would like to add the two tangs simultaneously. Should I add them first, or the squamipinnis? Both from an aggression and bio load perspective.
BTW, I plan to add more fish later, but are not fixed on particular ones yet.

Thanks,
timocean.

Personally I’d add the tangs first if you have natural algae forming around the tank- if not, the others. Agree that adding the tangs simultaneously is the best move (and same size) in my experience the acanthurus will get bigger faster and likely be the tank’s alpha; their temperament will guide the tank.

Anthias first, then tangs from an aggression standpoint. Opposite from a bioload standpoint.

Be aware there is a good chance in that size tank, your shoal may easily turn into 1 or 3 in pretty quick order.

Also make sure you have auto feeders setup for the anthias. They need to eat like 5 times a day.

Yup, tangs last, but at the same time.
Better if they are QT together, and all at once.
The Anthais will need some time to sort themselves out.

Tangs last, add ALL fish you want (even future ones) before you add the tangs unless it’s a Ctenochaetus IMHO. I find Ctenochaetus to be so much more peaceful whereas Acanthurus and Zebrasoma are aggressive and will most likely murder any new fish after they’re established.

Go first with anthias as you will want to assure none are changing sexes or fighting and doing well.
The Tangs who dwell on territories can then be introduced.

Thanks for all your replies! I would than go with the Anthias first.

However, this makes me worry! In fact I was unsure between Anthias and Chromis as a shoaling fish. Nevertheless, since I have read similar things about Chromis in various places, I thought Anthias would be the better choice. Do they also tend to kill each other??

They both have similar behavior. Chromis are much more likely to do it but it's still a reasonable risk unless you have a pretty large tank. You increase your chances by adding them all at once and feeding heavily and often.
