Hi all,

I am fairly new to saltwater and looking for some reccomendations for additional stock in my 525xl, be great to hear peoples reccomendations as to additional fish and maximum amount (I know the rule of thumb 1 inch per 5 gallon) Below is what i currently have:

  • Clown fish x2
  • Yellow wrasse
  • Blue damsel
  • Green mandarin
  • lawnmower blenny
  • Coral anthia
  • Pyjama kardinal
  • Royal gramma
  • Kole tang
  • Hippo tang (In QT)
  • Purple tang ( Not purchased will be last )
  • Turbo snails
  • Cerithium snails
  • Scarlet hermit crabs
Thanks !

That sounds like a cool tank.

I would read upon wrasses. A yellow wrasse can be at least a couple different species to me. Some will work and others probably won’t. Some will require sand too. Here’s a great place to start.

Similar discussion with the blue damsel. I have a couple yellow tail blue damsels in my 180 gallon tank. They appear to be mating and tolerate each other and the rest of my fish. Other blue damsels may be too aggressive. Damsels can be a real terror.

I’ve never had a mandarin. They are beautiful but require lots of liverock so that copepods can thrive As a food source.

I have a purple, 2 yellows, and hippo tang. My hippo is getting too big for my tank unfortunately. She’s a great fish but wants a bigger tank. I think yellows, or even the purple along with the kole would be best for you.

Good luck and have fun. I also recommend quarantine and use this method:

Hippo will get to big for it. Everything else should be fine. The purple might get to big over time. I have a purple in my 625 and it’s probably about the biggest fish I would have.

Damsel = Satin

Thanks for your replys, I am aware the hippo will eventually get too big for the 525, but thats an excuse to upgrade later down the line same with the purple tang, they will be both added when small also. My blue damsel is a perfect tank mate, never causes any issues, I think the blue damsel gets a bad reputation due to the other damsels.

My stock list isn't too large so I think the bio load should be ok I have a refugium and Nyos 220 skimmer which is much larger than needed.

My mandarin eats frozen mysis and live copepods, I have seeded the refugium and DT with pods also.
