Stocking for 60 gallon - Engineer goby and small eel

size doesnt mean space required though
Nope. That’s a decision you have to make. They are both of the genus echidna and thus their care is the same just the chain link is smaller.
They will spend 95% of their time in a cave. So don’t need much space most of the time. You could also look into the wolf eel but they are actually dottybacks and are that aggressive. Don’t know their compatibility with engineer gobies.

an lfs owner I trust said It would probably be okay as well as liveaquaria saying they are fine in 50g tanks - apparently they only get to 2 feet in captivity? But if its wrong then Im fine with just getting a school of engineer gobies, how many do you guys think is enough?
I have 3 eels. All 2 foot max. They would be miserable in a 60 gallon, no room for them to swim around. And they do come out and swim more than you would think. They like to stretch out too. My biggest one hangs out really far out of their burrow, my snowflake loves to swim in the open and my newest eel likes to slither around the bottom around the rocks
