So I have a 55 gallon running and only have a pair of clowns in my tank currently was just wondering about how many fish can I have in it and what’s the largest fish I could introduce?

What fishes are you interested in keeping?

# of fish is a bit of a complicated question. It basically boils down to:
1. Does 55 gallons work for each individual fish?
2. Compatibility between fishes
3. Nutrient (Nitrate and Phosphate) levels you are willing to deal with

Bigger fish that would work in a 55 gallon:
One of the smaller dwarf angels, like cherub or flameback
Certain larger fairy wrasses
Certain Halichoeres genus wrasses

Also look into:
hawkfish
Chrysiptera genus damsels
dartfish/firefish
cardinals
blennies
gobies
orchid dottyback
