Hi, I recently finished cycling my tank and I added a single clownfish and a royal gramma basslet. I am planning for it to be a mixed reef. It is a 5 foot 125-gallon tank. I have my heart set on a purple tang, however, I do not have a very good idea of what fish are compatible with it. Some other fish ideas I had that could be tankmates with the P.T would be a fox face, another clown and eventually after my system is established, a leopard wrasse. Does anybody have any other good ideas for fish that would work with what I have in mind? Any advice or ideas are appreciated, thx. (bright and colourful fish would be best)

Since your tank is huge get a pair of mandarin dragonet, I wish i could keep them but my tank is too small for the copepods to grow in.

My understanding is as long as you aren't getting other tangs you will be fine. Wrasses, anthias, basslets, gobies. What kind of fish do you like?

Really I'm just looking for anything with a good temperament and lots of colours. suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Good idea on adding another clownfish.

A leopard wrasse would work well! Very colorful, but I'm not sure if it could coexist with a mandarin dragonet. Silly podivores being all colorful lol.

Regal angelfish are tough to keep from what I've heard, but they're very colorful.

A kole tang would complement the purple tang nicely in terms of cleaning the tank (Zebrasomas are great at getting the longer algaes, will Ctenochaetuses will scrape algae off of the tank). Chevron tangs are stunning as juveniles, but I feel they're quite drab as adults (sadly).

Fairy and Flasher wrasses tick all the boxes for good temperament and very colorful.

The copperband butterfly is a classic in the hobby. They do have a few feeding issues, so it's best to do your research before buying.

As for inspiration, have you looked at liveaquaria?

Creating a list is easily the best way to go about making a stock list, and the fact you are even considering a stock list prior is already a big W!

List seems good!

If you wanted you could have other tangs as well. The way to do this is to add them all at the same time. Tangs can be jerks though.
One male and two female leopard wrasses looks awesome.
Three or four Anthias also look good.
Groups of dartfish, and cardinals look nice. A trio of pyramid butterflies would also look fantastic.
Can you tell I like schooling species...
Singular fish, two or three different (could be the same though) pygmy angels, are always nice imo. Long nose and flame hawkfish are fun additions. As are the blennies. Really as long as it doesn't get too big or eat coral, the choice is yours.

I mostly agree with below

I would have the purple tang be the only big laterally compressed fish...so no other tangs, butterflies, etc, although dwarf angels can usually hold their own.

The purple tang won't notice dissimilarly shaped fish. So get your clowns and leopard wrasse.
Then something like:
Orchid dotty
H. chrysus wrasse
flame hawk
starry blenny
sapphire damsel
bangaii cardinal
pink spot watchman goby

or if you like fairy wrasses, or anthias, or whatever, go that route.
