Sounds like similar behavior to my royal gramma currently, hides in the rocks until time to eat. And my only two other fish (clowns) just rub the thermometer all day..... it’s just a 4x2 picture of rocks unless my cleaner shrimp is hanging out in front.

In that size tank the bass and gramma will be fine. Genicanthus angels are planktivores, so safe with coral.

It should be added before the tangs. Tangs are aggressive to other deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish.

I am a huge fan of basslets. If want to stay away from yellow tangs and want yellow in the tank. Look at yellow coris or yellow & purple (aka 4spot) wrasse. Golden assessor basslet (they are weird because they hang out under caves upside down. Your kids might get a kick out of that.)
Purple - purple tile fish. There is even a flasher tile fish, but they are very hard to come by and twice as hard to keep. They flash colors like an octopus when stressed.) There are a plenty of wrasse. Purple Queen anthias.
Blue - Blue Spotted Jawfish have a huge personality. Possibly my favorite fish. Set one up for the front of your tank with a tunnel. Glue a bunch of rock frags so it makes a donut shape for an entrance that leads down into a cave. Just make sure your lid is tight. If not you will have a $150 carpet surfer. Psychedelic Mandarin is another choice. Pods are must for them. Mine is beautiful and a chunker, but a lot of care goes into him.

I did not cycle it being so little of an amount of rock. I have 62lbs and Marine Pure that can handle the nitrogen cycling process no problem.
For his hang out spot he is in. The main center rock for the tank had a nice cupping of the palm shape to it underneath. So he started on the left side. Also dugout the right. In the beginning all I did was take my psiphon hose and sucked up the sand with an inhale to carve out a hole underneath(you can see the hole in the video). After a week I placed a donut shape of rocks glued together to the front entrance(he took a liking to my assistance). A week later I took a pound of rock, wrapped in some paper towels, and smacked the rock with a kitchen mallet. Took all the jagged edges off from them(so he doesn't scratch himself going in and out). Then tossed those in for him to play around with every day to doll up the entrance. He has been in there for months.

Inch and a half for most of it. 3 inches in one corner the yellow and purple wrasse sleeps in. They sleep in the sand bed.
