Hey guys, had this thing pop up overnight next to the thermometer.

Poked it with tweezers and it felt like a rock, didn’t budge at all. Also doesn’t move or react to light or touch.

Slid it up and out of the tank and it curled up as soon as it left the water

Its sitting in a glass of water currently and keeps opening up then closing like a slater

Any ideas?

Isopod. I'm not sure if good or bad though, I know some latch on to fish and kill them.

I believe it's a chiton- it doesn't look like it has legs (correct me if I'm wrong) isopods (iso- meaning same, pod- referring to the legs) have a bunch of legs that all look the same, hence the name. What I think I'm looking at is a chiton, which is kind of like a limpet in that it has a foot and eats algae. I'd keep it, but if you already threw it out it's no big deal.

It opened up fully and had a foot like a snail so I think your right. Might just put him back in now.

You're right! I saw it curl and immediately thought isopod, I totally forgot chitons were a thing. Good catch!

Chiton, its really hard to remove. And if you look at it from the glass it should resemble a slug or a snail’s foot. Beneficial cuc. An interesting trait about Chitons, they will create a sleeping spot for themselves in the rockwork and return there after foraging for algae.

Thats pretty cool, really glad i didnt throw the little guy out

Love me some fuzzy chitons! It's the one invert that will always be in my tank(unless I go acrylic, and I'll explain further down).

Another interesting fact about chitons....

They have the hardest substance known to man for teeth(yes harder then diamonds), and can leave bite marks in glass tanks. They would be a nightmare in an acrylic tank.
