Stop algae on glass and start coraline?! Help!

Hi there!

So I have a well established nano tank (fluval m40) and I seem to clean my glass every other day as it gains a dusting of algae on. Sometimes I'll clean it in the morning and there will be more algae back on in the afternoon!

How can I promote the growth of coraline algae ???

I dose kalkwasser in my ato and trace elements once per week.

Any help would be great. Alfie.

how old is tank? My tank is 5-6 months old and I just now have coraline growing on the rear wall. Front and side glass gets good dusting built up every other day. parameters are in check.

Yeah I'm about the same actually... hopefully will start to see it soon then?

Is it true that once coraline starts to grow it will stop the other sorts of algae growing as fast because it's out demanding it?

!!! Welcome to R2R Alfie !!! Kalkwaisser will help a lot. I dose Kalk thru my ATO and I got back glass covered with coralline algae and sometimes once a week I need to clean my side glass of coralline algae growing. . I use BRS Kalkwaisser and my ATO is 5 gallons so I use 5 teaspoons of KAlk on my ATO that takes about a week to get almost empty.

Alfie, you have a combination of feeding and water change. If you control your feeding schedule and do a 10% WC weekly you will see a huge improvement in your tank. That's what I do on my 40g and is doing great.

Some folks use a product called Vibrant in their tanks to deal with the film algae.
To spread coralline algae I scrape it off my tank walls and it sprouts everywhere. Do you have any live rock or snails or frag plugs with coralline algae that you could scrape?

I do have a few corals in my tank I'm sure one piece will have some coraline on the plug. I will have a look at that vibrant product as well. Thank you very much!

Great. Do you test your water for calcium, alkalinity and magnesium to see how are your levels?

I agree with @KrisReef. I use Vibrant with great results when I had bubble algae going crazy in my tank.

I havnt tested in a week or so but last time I checked my levels were bang on.

I check for Alk every week before the WC to see what actually my tank is consuming and an hour after the WC in case I need to add Alk. no more than 1ml a day until reach my desire level. For now my Kalkwaisser is keeping my alk on level so everything is good.
