Would it be ok to use a stop valve to dial in a turf scrubber off my return line?

fisrt off theres no such thing as a stop valve, the correct name is a globe valve, why places have them listed a a stop valve i have no idea as gate valves are normalay used as stop valves due to better flow isolation characteristics. and yes it would work as they are desigend for flow control you jut have to make sure you install it in the correct direction, in the pictured valve flow is right to left. . you also have to keep in mind that if any. thing get hung up on the seatand the disc will cause flow and isolation problems. this can be solves by cycling the full open and back to the desired p[osition, most of the time. also who ever labeled that valve only gets a 75% for correct rerminology andabout a 45% for labeling of criticla parts

So would you not recommend the stop valve? I wouldnt get a gate valve for this. My local ace hardware has pvc globe valves for like 3 bucks.

That stop/globe valve will work great, it just may require more maintenance then say a gate valve. If you need more precise flow control it's what ide use. Realistically you'll only run into problems if you get like a snail shell past your ATS

would you use one for a herbie overflow full siphon drain? I have a true union ball valve for it though, which would be more likely to clog?

Stick with a ball or gate for that valve, a gate will give better flown control than a ball in that situation. But with a globe in that spot if you have a fish or snail or something go in you overflow it will plug and you return pump will put your entire sump into the DT
