yeah, that can work where a gate valve would be used; a stop valve can be used to throttle down flow, so would work with an Herbie.

I would stick with a gate valve, looking at a cutaway picture of a stop valve looks like it would be easier to suddenly plug with a chunk of algae which seem to break loose in our overflows from time to time.
