Hi All,

I currently use brute 32 gal trash can to mix salt and keep RoDi water. I also have 55 container that held olives at one point. I washed it with water and vinegar but the smell is completely not gone yet. Would it be safe to use for water mixing ?

I would suggest a couple more cleanings. Possible use a 10:1 water/muriatic acid soak. The acid should clean out all of the brine remnants. Follow that up with a good fresh water soak.

Thanks how I would know if it’s safe to use for water? I know I will rinse and let it soak but I want to make sure it doesn’t go into display tank

Muriatic acid will take down everything to the container itself. A good rinse, and if you are really anal about it, add a box of baking soda to the rinse water. That will neutralize any remaining acid. One more fresh water rinse and good to go.

I use a similar barrel but it had sausage casings in it. It was washed out several times with dish soap and vinegar, years later it still has a bit of a funky smell. I use it to mix saltwater, I’ve never noticed any problems with the tank after a WC.

I put 2 gallons and rinsed it with water. It doesn’t smell like olives but it smells like chemicals will that go away? Or keep rinsing ? I did add water and some baking soda for a soak

The baking soda will neutralize any remaining acid. A couple of good rinses, you should be good to go.
