I just got my first shipment of 5280 from Alge Barn today. So I am going to seed my first tank tonight but going to have to wait to start my new tank till Friday. So the two jars extra I got what’s the best way to keep those alive till Friday?

@AlgaeBarn correct me if I am wrong but pods can be refrigerated can't they? I had a friend that kept his in a wine fridge. so cold but not refrigerator cold. Want to say he got away with around 50 degrees.

50-55 degrees is what we recommend for LFS. For consumers, we recommend

Easy way:
  • Storing in a cool place
  • Remove the lid
  • If you purchased Oceanmagik, add a small amount to the jars to tint the water.

If you want a little more involved process (and better):
  • Store in a cool place
  • Get a 5 gallon bucket or small aquarium (really any larger container will work)
  • Add a gallon or two of fresh saltwater (you could use tank water here too).
  • Pour the pods in, rinse the jars with more fresh saltwater (or tank water) to get all of the pods that may cling to the walls.
  • As long as it is shallow enough (think a few inches of water), the pods will be fine for until Friday.
    • Avoid doing there is an area that would promote rapid evaporation. Pods can handle huge salinity swings, but the less stress, the better.
  • If you purchased OceanMagik, add a small amount to the new vessel to tint the water.

Wine fridges are acceptable, but not standard refrigerator temperature. Tig pods can handle a standard refrigerator, but it is still stressful on them.

Thanks so much!

"As long as it's shallow enough"

Does this mean I can't transfer them to a sterile jar, and instead need to keep them in shalow environment if I am trying to keep them alive for a couple weeks?

For 3 or 4 days I would just leave them in the bottle in room temp with the cap off.

Or put some saltwater in a bowl or something and then add the pods with a bit of phyto.

In the fridge some will hibernate and some will die. Consider that the LFS kept them in fridge, then down to room temp when you purchase them, going back into the fridge will have die off.

You could make a culture - 2 quart Jug, bubbler, phyto or algae powder , saltwater. I have 2 of these going and dose my tank every other day from them.

I actually have a full culturing setup I just finished building for 4 gallons of pods and 4 gallons of phyto. But I my pods are coming in tomorrow and was wondering how I can store them outside of the culture.

I went the whole 9 yards on making my own poseidon reef setup, just waiting on the rubber to come in to cover the leds on the middle of the jar.

Fancy! I just point a plant light at it. I bet it would be fine without the rubber for a few days if you refrain from dripping on it

The pods were just delivered.

I opened the jar, put phyto in, and it seems very alive. Hoping to wait until Friday. Should I worry about airation at all? Perhaps give them a stir?

Edit: Seems is an understatement, props to algae barn getting these to me alive in 20 degree weather. The movement is way better than I expected coming in from the cold.
