I toke out a lot of chaeto algae a while back and stored it in a little container with tank water.
But now I want it back in the tank but after opening the bottle it smelled really bad like rotten eggs. And there was a white layer on top of the water.
I gave it a really good rinse in the sink and now the smell is gone. The cheato now looks perfectly clean and green without smell.

Would it be save to put it back in the tank?
I dont know much about macro algae, as far as I know it's just a plant right? and as long as its green its good? please correct me if im wrong. ;Playful

I'm surprised it hasnt shrunken down. Bad chaeto can cause issues with your tank. You could keep it in a container and change the water to see if it growns but i'd be 100% sure its ok before you put it in your tank.

I agree with Reefjnky. Can you give the chaeto fresh water in the bucket and put a light on it to monitor it there before throwing it back in your system?

Oke thank you both for the tip. I have put the leftover algae (It did shrink up a lot when storing) in a white container filled with fresh salt water in a well lit window. Would this be enought? or does it really need a light?

Depending on how much natural light comes through the window it may not be enough to give you the answer if it is stil good or not and may die back from not having enough light.

After doing some more research I'm not really sure if it's Chaeto algae. Could you guys please help me identify this algae?

This is the algae that I still have after storing:

This is how the algae looks in the tank:

That looks like Sea lettuce not Chaeto. There are a lot of translucent pieces that I would remove but some of the dark green pieces should make a comeback
