Hi guys

I know we can store RO/DI water for very long time but what about RO/DI water mixed with sea salt? My RO/DI device had some issues so I went to my local FS and the guy mixed red sea salt for me and asked me to use the mixed water within 2-3 hours. That means once mixed I should use the water within a couple of hours or can i store and keep it for like weeks?

Thanks in advance #reefsquad

Thanks

It depends what type of coral you have imo. I use to buy Red Sea at the lfs and didn’t have any issues with lps, zoas, mushrooms if I let the water sit a week or more in 5gal jugs. I would just shake it up a bit a few times before my wc. I did how ever notice I would rtn sps after water changes. I think this was due to the small amount of precipitation that occurs when using stored water. I did switch salts to tropic marin pro and now I mix at home, haven’t lost any sps since. Not the best sample study since I switched salts but I think mixing it at home and adding directly to the tank really has something notable to do with it.

Also Fwiw my smaller tank, my 40b strictly gets water changed on stored Red Sea coral pro. Lps and softies thrive in there and it’s a brand new setup. No polyp extension on my trial acros :(

i dont have any SPS. just wanted to know roughly how long can i keep red sea salt mixed water :)
Nice, yea I’ve stored it over 3 weeks before, no issues for lps. A few flakes at the bottom of the jug, not bad.

For the pro salt Red Sea recommend a mixing time lesser than 2 hours. The reason for this is for me unknown and I am not sure that this advises is valid for the normal salt mix. If you store it - I would store it airtight and aerate it heavily before use.

Sincerely Lasse

You definitely want to seal it good. Aerate it well. Keep it out of direct sunlight, use ONLY FOOD GRADE containers. Keep it away from harsh chemicals, solvents and gasses even being covered.

I run an airstone in my saltwater reservoir (150 gallon) and that’s it, the water is stored for up to 6 weeks before the container is empty and needs refilling . I’ve never once had a problem with storing it. My tank is stuffed full of SPS and they don’t care how old my saltwater is FWIW.
