Storing natural seawater

Just wondering how long you can store nsw ?

I did a search before asking this but alot of the threads were years old

So thought id ask for a updated answer as ive noticed we learn new ways every day

I have a 50 gal tank I keep some buckets of NSW around but never longer than a month. But! It only 50 so with water changes I go through it semi quickly. How long are you planning on stockpiling? My water source is pretty easily accessible to me. I would think if you added flow it wouldn’t be a problem forever.

Was thinking about a month aswell
I also have a 50 gallon tub
So by the time i do roughly 4 water changes itll be finished

I have pushed it even longer myself. Not intentionally but setbacks/laziness. So I guess I can say from experience monthish... has been fine for myself and my fish and coral. But I can’t speak for beyond 45-50 days (rough estimate haven’t counted)

I have natural sea water that I store in a 190L barrel obviously use between 25L and 50L per water change 25 weekly 50L every 4th week. So full one last me around 4 or 5 weeks. Never have issues with mine and salinity keeps at 1.027 just have to dilute it with fresh water to lower it to 1.025.

Haha yeah no matter how many times I still need to go to a conversion table ita also the same for farenheit to celcius.

What exactly is ur method to storing it. Just in a bucket with a lid? Any aeration to stop die off?

Yes, just a bucket with a lid. No aeration, TV or anything else. It may cloud up in a week or two as the bacteria grow on the sides of the bucket, but it will become crystal clear a few days later and can be stored forever just like it is stored in the sea.

I don't know where that came from that you can't store it. I have 30 gallons here now from last summer that I sometimes add but I really need to change my water so maybe I will use it this week.

What exactly is ur method to storing it. Just in a bucket with a lid? Any aeration to stop die off?

Honestly after this post i took what paul b said and ive stored saltwater untouched in a barrel with a lid for over 6 months and didnt have any negative effects whatsoever

So i only do it if theres noticeable particles floating around but no harm in doing it

Hey mate

I collect NSW and depending on the time I get it I normally filter through a 5micron sock. But have at time not bothered as it looked prity clear to me.

I'll store them in 35L drums and have 5 and will use 1 or 2 a week, been doing it for 2 years.

Is there any way to assure there are not fish parasites in the water? Seems like Ich, velvet or any other bad microbes could be floating in the water.
